Lava flows from the Mount Etna volcano on the southern Italian island of Sicily on December 6. The volcano threw up an ash column some 7km-high, with lava flowing from the Voragine crater for the first time in two years. The eruption, which began on Dec 3, is among the most “energetic of the past 20 years”, the National Institute of Geophysics and Vulcanology said.

Activists of the Young Ecologists group take part in a symbolic swimming competition under the slogan “If we don’t get COP21 right, we will have to swim to COP106”, at the COP21 UN climate change conference in Paris on Dec 5.
