United efforts stressed to curb domestic violence

KHULNA: Speakers at a workshop here yesterday have stressed the need for joint and sincere efforts of all stakeholders to bring an end to domestic violence against women for revitalising social values and building a peaceful society, reports BSS. They also underscored the need for showing cooperative attitude to each other among the family members and in the working places and institutions and assist empowering the womenfolk to eradicate the social crimes once for all. The speakers said this at a workshop on “Challenges and Recommendations for Implementation of Domestic Violence (Protection and Safety net) Act 2010 and Ordinance 2013”, held at the conference room of Khulna Divisional Commissioner’s Office.
Under the Protecting Human Rights Programme (PHR), Plan International Bangladesh, a non government organisation, organised the programme aided by USAID. Chaired by Angela Gomez, Executive Director of ‘Banchte Shekha’, a Jessore based NGO, the workshop was attended by Divisional Commissioner of Khulna and Additional Secretary Md. Abdus Samad as chief guest while Additional Commissioner Faruk Hossain attended as special guest. Advocate Towhida Khondokar, Director of Bangladesh National Women Lawyers Association, delivered the welcome speech and presented a power point presentation while Judicial Magistrates, Women Affairs Officers, Lawyers, NGO personnel and journalists, among others, spoke.
Government and NGO officials, lawyers, journalists, women community leaders, professionals, public representatives and elite took part in the workshop. The speakers asked the civil society and community leaders to come up with their realistic approaches for achieving the desired success in ensuring advancement of society involving the womenfolk and leading to overall social and national developments. They narrated different types of violence against women including the domestic torture and said the women have been facing such a situation in every family and all working places due to lack of adequate awareness and cooperative attitudes. The speakers also placed various recommendations for preventing violence against women to build more civilized and a developed Bangladesh by ensuring women’s rights at all levels.
