The National Board of Revenue has filed a general diary against Jamuna Group Chairman Nurul Islam Babul and journalist Helal Uddin, business editor of the Jugantor, a Bengali daily owned by the group, with the Ramna Model Police Station yesterday.
NBR Second Secretary (Administration) A H M Abdul Karim had filed the complaint, officials of the Ramna Police station told the media.
According to a media statement issued by the NBR the decision to file the diary against the two was taken at a special board meeting presided over by NBR Chairman Najibur Rahman on Wednesday.
“Dainik Jugantor and Jamuna TV owned by the Jamuna Group have been pulled up for a series of reports that smack of 'vendetta' and are downright scurrilous, defamatory, false and baseless' the NBR statement said.
"If an organisation like NBR that is responsible for collection of revenue cannot function, the nation's development will suffer seriously. So an attack on NBR is like an attack on the nation itself," the NBR statement said, quoting its chief Rahman. But Jamuna Group chairman told a news agency that reports published in the Jugantor were based on facts.
