Chris Gayle finally hit the bowlers with a wave of morbid depression and entertained the crowd with a flurry of massive sixes as Barisal Bulls comfortably secured an eight-wicket win over hapless Chittagong Vikings in BPL at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium yesterday.
Gayle, the mercenary of T20 cricket, smashed an unbeaten 45-ball 92, clubbing six fours and nine towering sixes, some of which landed at the gallery.
The Gayle-show effectively sealed the deal for Barisal with 30 balls to spare after Vikings were restricted to 135 for seven. Fittingly he struck consecutive two sixes to bring an intriguing finish to the match.
After having two failures, Gayle was due to pay off at some point of the BPL and much to the dismay of Vikings, Gayle regained his form against them. Despite amassing a mediocre total, Vikings were in the contention, having removed Rony Talukdar and Mehedi Maruf cheaply to leave Bulls at 33 for two.
Gayle by this time slowly gained his momentum. As he set off, Vikings were clearly left in a dazed state and accepted the fate of defeat even before the match ended.
Vikings were led by Tillakaratne Dilshan in this match as Tamim Iqbal withdrew himself following a slight injury scare.
Dilshan, aided by Anamul Haque Bijoy, gave the side a solid start having amassed 52 runs off six overs in the opening stand which raised a prospect of a big score.
Bulls bowlers, however, bowled well in tandem to choke Chittagong at the half-way mark.
