Every year people here celebrate December 10 as Mymensingh Free Day as the district was fully liberated from the occupation of Pakistan Army on this day in 1971.
Immediately after the crackdown in 1971, the Occupation Pak Army made several vain attempts to enter into Mymensingh town.
First, the invaders tried to enter into the district by trains from Dhaka. Having failed in those attempts, they tried through river routes to take over the control of the district town, a middle point of Mymensingh region. These attempts too backfired. At last they attempted to reach Mymensingh town through Madhupur of Tangail district.
The freedom fighters built their strong hold at frontier Haluaghat upazila of the district.
On December 10, they led by Religious Minister Principal Motiur Rahman, also president of Awami League district unit and allied forces marched towards Mymensingh town and freed it from the occupation of Pakistan Army.
Some 125 freedom fighters including students and cultural activists sacrificed their valuable lives for the freedom of the mother land.
To keep the memory of the freedom fighters and martyrs, a Liberation War Memorial titled ‘Muktijuddah Smiriti Saudha’ had been built on the bank of Brahmaputra River in the town in 2000.
Marking the day, Muktijuddah Sangsad Mymensingh unit and Mymensingh Free and Victory Day Celebration Committee have organised a week long programme at Chhoto Bazar Mukta Mancha in the town which will end on December 16.
Narail was freed from the clutches of Pakistan occupation army on this day in 1971.
The valiant freedom fighters of Narail along with the freedom loving common people and without participation of allied forces were able to free Narail completely.
Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad, district administration and different socio- cultural organisations undertook different programmes to observe the day in a befitting manner with much festivity.
Freedon Fighter Saifur Rahman Hilu informed, the programme of the day includes placing floral wreaths at the martyr’s memorial, mass graveyards, slaughtering point, colourful rally and discussion meeting.
