Nearly 10,000 permanent and casual workers of the state-owned jute mills of Khulna-Jessore industrial belt and other areas of the country continued their agitation for the five-point demand. The workers under the banner of Collective Bargaining Agent (CBA) and Non-CBA Oikya Parishad jointly staged demonstrations in front of Crescent Jute Mill at Khalishpur in Khulna city on Friday afternoon to press home the demands. They wearing red badges marched through roads of Khalishpur, Daulatpur and Atra industrial areas chanting slogans.
Organizers of the movement said their 18-day agitation programme began on May 9 and will end on June 14 through putting up barricades on the road and railways from 10 am to 12 noon in Khulna, Dhaka, Chittagong and Rajshahi. Jute mill CBA leaders at a rally urged BJMC to fulfill their demands for greater economic interest of the country. Otherwise, workers will go on non-stop movement which will continue till their all demands are fully met.
The rest 18-day programme includes staging demonstrations at all state-owned jute mill compounds from 10 am till 11 am on June 7, 24-hour work-stoppage at BJMC jute mills on June 8 and hunger strike from 10 am till 5 pm at Shaheed Hadis Park in Khulna and on the jute mills premises in Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi and Narsingdi on June 10. The five-point demand for which workers have gone on movement include payment of dues and other financial benefits, allocation of adequate fund needed to purchase raw materials for running jute mills undisturbed to reach production target, payment of twenty percent dearness allowance, exploration of markets at home and abroad for selling products and removal of corrupt officials to make administration of the mills transparent. The central committee president of National Jute Mills Workers’ League Sardar Motahar Uddin addressed the demonstration as the chief guest. The convener of the committee and general secretary of CBA of Crescent Jute Mills Md Sohrab Hossain presided over the rally.
