‘Many high-profile people get ACC clean chit’

Criticising the role of the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC), Samakal editor Golam Sarwar yesterday said the national anti-graft body gave clean chit to some high-profile people despite having specific allegations against them, reports UNB.
“There’re many high-profile corrupt people who got clean chit… this is true,” he told a discussion.
The ACC arranged the discussion at its conference room marking the International Anti-Corruption Day 2015.
Speaking as the chief guest, Golam Sarwar said the Commission receives thousands of allegations each month, but it has no capacity to conduct probes into every allegation for lack of manpower.
Besides, he said, the ACC receives many false allegations and journalists must be aware of those in filing their stories.
The editor suggested increasing the manpower of the Commission to fight corruption effectively in the country.
Calling upon all to join the anti-corruption movement, ACC chairman M Badiuzzman said the ACC always accepts criticism but those should be constructive ones.
“Sometimes, unfair criticism hurts us....after taking criticism, we always review our works,” he added.
ACC commissioners M Shahabuddin and Dr M Nasir Uddin Ahmed also spoke at the discussion.
To mark the International Anti-Corruption Day 2015 with a slogan ‘Take a vow with patriotism and say goodbye to corruption’, the Anti Corruption Commission brought out a procession led by its chairman M Badiuzzman, in the city in the morning.
Later in the day, it formed a human chain programme in front of the Jatiya Press Club.ACC commissioners M Shahabuddin and Dr M Nasir Uddin Ahmed and other officials joined the programme.
In a message on the occasion, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called for united efforts to deliver a clear message around the world that firmly rejects corruption and embraces instead the principles of transparency, accountability and good governance.
