BNP Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday accused ruling party chief and head of government of initiating irregularities in the upcoming municipality polls.
“We think that the ruling party chief and head of government herself has violated election rules and initiated irregularities. Thus, it will not be possible for the Election Commission (EC) to hold polls in a free and neutral manner,” he said while addressing a press conference at BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office.
Fakhrul said according to the law, the person authorised to send nominations is supposed to send approval letters to respective returning officers, selecting one candidate from the party for each municipality mayoral post.
However, Awami League (AL) Chief Sheikh Hasina sent approval letters selecting more than one candidate for each municipality mayoral post, alleged Fakhrul.
The municipalities include: Shariatpur Sadar, Betagi upazila of Barguna, Paikgachha upazila of Khulna, and Magura Sadar.
The BNP Acting Secretary General said that while they have proof in these four cases, they suspect there might be other cases as well.
