BNP plans major campaign blitz

The BNP is planning a major campaign blitz for the party candidates who will contest the December 30 municipality elections for the first time under the party symbol.
The vigorous campaign is likely to be spearheaded by party chairperson Khaleda Zia to mobilise public support for the mayoral candidates, according to party leaders.
Under the supervision of the party’s acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing committee member Goyeshwar Chandra Roy and joint secretary general Md Shajahan will lead and coordinate the campaign, they said.
Khaleda Zia is going to hold party standing committee meeting tonight at her Gulshan office to discuss the overall political and the civic polls situation including campaign strategies. She is also expected to give responsibilities to party leaders to supervise the electioneering, sources said.
Senior party leaders expressed their hope that Khaleda Zia would visit some municipalities and take part in the election campaign to boost the party rank and file and drum up support for the BNP candidates.
The party, however, has not given any time schedule for Khaleda Zia. “We want Madam Khaleda Zia to visit some of the nearby municipalities and campaign to inspire all the party leaders and supporters to work in a united manner,” said standing committee member Brig. Gen. (retd) ASM Hannan Shah.
He said that a suggestion has been made to the party high command to launch a comprehensive election campaign across the country.
The party leaders are expected to go on the campaign trail after forming separate groups from December 13, the last date for withdrawal of candidates. The BNP high command has already asked former ministers, lawmakers and senior leaders to go to their respective areas and campaign for the party candidates, sources said.
A massive election campaign, using the party symbol of a sheaf of paddy, would not only boost the morale of party workers and supporters, but also mobilise public support for the party candidates, party leaders said.
Standing committee member Goyeshwar Chandra Roy said they would put in all their organisational might to protect the people’s voting rights during the local government polls.
Assistant publicity secretary Imran Saleh Prince said the party is likely to finalise its strategies and form some committees to deal with the election campaign and monitoring work.
“Our candidates have already started mass contact seeking blessing of the people. They will begin the formal campaign from Dec 14 with the party symbol,” he added.
In another development, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday handed over a list of the party’s mayoral candidates to its divisional organising secretaries. This was done to assist the divisional units in carrying out electioneering and monitoring election activities smoothly, according to a source at the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office.
He handed over the candidates’ list at a meeting with divisional organising secretaries and their deputies at the office.
The BNP leader also gave different directives to the leaders to carryout electioneering vigorously so that the party candidates sweep the polls.
