MoU signed with Singaporean company for Matarbari project

State-owned Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh Limited (CPGCBL) yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Singaporean company Sembcorp to build a 700MW power plant at Matarbari in Cox’s Bazar today (09/12/15).
Tan Chen Guang, executive vice president and head, group business development & commercial, Sembcorp Industries and Md Abul Kasem, managing director of CPGCBL, signed on the Mou on behalf of their respective organisations.
As per the MoU, the Singaporean company will look after the construction of the proposed 2 X 600MW coal-fired power plant, the construction of a jetty for coal imports, coal storage facilities, the development of a township, rural electrification and transmission facilities and roadways.
On August 5, the Cabinet Purchase Committee approved a separate unsolicited Sembcorp offer to set up a 400MW dual-fuel power plant on a build-own-operate (BOO) basis, under a joint venture with state-owned North-West Power Generation Company Ltd (NWPGCL).
The government plans to set up series of coal-fired power projects to generate 20,000MW of electricity by 2030.
