Former DG of IRRI visits BRRI

Eminent Indian scientist and former Director General of International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) Professor Dr MS Swaminathan visited Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) in Gazipur yesterday.
BRRI Director General Dr Jiban Krishna Biswas welcomed Dr Swaminathan and his team at the institute. He briefed about its main objectives and discussed areas of collaboration between BRRI and MS Swaminathan Research Foundation of India in a meeting.
BRRI Director (Research) Dr Md Ansar Ali and heads of the research divisions of the institute along with the senior scientists and officials attended the meeting.
Dr Swaminathan came to Bangladesh for a two-day long visit targeting exchange of ideas between scientists and policy makers as well as having some first-hand knowledge on issues like impacts of climate change in rice environments in the region. During his visit, the speakers stressed on the need for quick dissemination of modern rice production technologies using participatory and translational research approach to the farm level especially in the south-western and southern coastal belt of the country in a discussion.
Dr Swaminathan expressed satisfaction after getting some latest information about BRRI and its role in ensuring food security of the country.  He also expressed willingness to extend all out cooperation to BRRI.
He showed special interest at the BRRI activities on plant breeding, biotechnology, farm mechanisation, the Gene Bank and the institute’s attentiveness in facing climate change during the visit.
