Begum Rokeya Day-2015 in observed in the city yesterday in a befitting manner with a call to all to work for implementing the ideology of Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain, a Muslim feminist and social reformer who dedicated her life to education and the empowerment of women.
The district administration, women affairs department and Sammilita Rokeya Dibas Udjapon Parshad organised a programme, including cultural functions and discussion on the life and achievements of Begum Rokeya, the pioneer of women renaissance of this subcontinent, on the premises of Aswani Kumar Hall in the city.
Speakers at the discussion called for ensuring empowerment women, especially the poor and rural ones, and raising awareness about their rights.
Rabeya Khatun, president of the District Mahila Parishad, presided over the discussion at Mahila Parishad office.
It was addressed, among others, by women leader Nigar Sultana Hanufa and social cultural human and women rights activists including Nazrul Islam Chunnu, Jiban Krishna Dey, Akkas Hossain.
On the other hand, Jatiya Nari Sramik Trade Union Kendra Barisal district unit organised a discussion at A Karim Ideal College ground of the city .
The programme was presided over by Nigar Sultana Hanufa, district president of the organisation.
It was addressed among others by Khadiza Begum Binata, secretary of the Kendra, and AK Azad, a trade unionist.
Speakers at the programme said Begum Rokeya had struggled for establishing women rights, freedom, education, empowerment and economic emancipation during her lifetime.
"Begum Rokeya struggled her whole life for the expansion of women education and implementing discrimination-free women’s right is historical. So we have to give emphasis on the development and rights of the neglected poor and rural women for ensuring their empowerment and economic uplift of the country," a speaker said.
