RAJSHAHI: Speakers at a post-rally discussion have underscored the need for forging social movement against corruption for building a poverty-free Bangladesh, reports BSS.
They viewed community participation towards the anti-corruption campaign has become an urgent need for building a mass-opinion against the corruption.
Committee of Concerned Citizens (CCC), an inspired organisation of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), organised the event at its office yesterday to mark the International Anti Corruption Day-2015.
Various social and voluntary organisations like Sachetan, Supro, BLAST, Trinamool, Bangladesh Mohila Parishad, Partner, Barendra Unnayan Prochesta, Prip Trust, BELA, ACD, Brac and PSTC joined the programme.
With CCC member Prof Abdul Salam in the chair, retired Deputy Director of Department of Social Service Mojammel Haque, Associate Professor Tanjima Johra Habib from Department of Social Work of Rajshahi University, Director of Partner Sangstha Alima Akhter Lima and TIB Regional Manager Mahmud Ali spoke on the occasion.
Language Veteran Mosharraf Hossain Akunji, former assistant director of department of social service Joytuna Khatun and CCC member Munira Rahman Mithi were present at the meeting.
Earlier, the CCC members and representatives of the associate organisations brought out an anti-corruption rally from Alupatty crossing and paraded different city streets for creating mass-awareness against corruption.
Staff reporter adds from Khulna: Marking the day speakers at a programme laid importance on creation of awareness among mass people, especially the young generation, to eliminate corruption from the country as the time has come to change mindset to survive well. ‘It is impossible for the ACC alone to fight corruption. A concerted effort is crucially important to check bribery,’ the speakers said. They called upon the media to come forward in support of the campaign. ‘We would have to launch fight against corruption that hinders the economic progress,’ they said adding that Bangladesh earned political independence in 1971 but the economic freedom has not yet been achieved after 44 years of the independence.
The speakers further said institutional corruption have to check first before taking lawful action against a person who involved with corruption willingly or unwillingly. Participants also said though elimination of corruption is very difficult task, nevertheless, we have to work together to reduce corruption into at tolerable level.
Khulna district unit of Corruption Prevention Committee arranged the human chain on the ocassion in the city as elsewhere in the country in a beffiting manner. The theme of this year was, ‘Break the corruption chain.’
The human chain followed by a rally at the Picture Palace Cinema Hall intersection with District Corruption Prevention Committee member and freedom fighter Md Abu Zafar was in the chair.
The rally was addressed, among others, Deputy Director of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Khulna division Md Abdul Hye, Mina Azizur Rahman, Advocate Selimul Azad, Advocate Kudrat-e-Khuda, Advocate Shamima Sultana Shilu, Mizanur Rahman Babu, Nizamur Rahman Lalu, Shahin Zaman Pan, Advocate Mominul Islam. Joint secretary of Corruption Prevention Committee, Khulna district unit Moniruzzaman Rahim conducted the rally.
