Expatriate beaten dead over land
Gazipur:  A Saudi expatriate was beaten to death allegedly by his uncle at Rathura Belun village in Kaliganj upazila on Saturday. The deceased was identified as Zillur Rahman, 35, a resident of the village. Witnesses said Zillur, who had come to his village home two weeks ago, locked in an altercation with his uncle Najuk Mia over the ownership of a piece of land around 11 am. At one stage, Najuk beat up Zillur with a stick mercilessly, leaving him dead on the spot. Police recovered the body and sent it to sadar hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Pro-BNP leader killed
KHULNA: A local leader of Swechchhasebak Dal was killed in an attack by some people over previous enmity at Shovona village in Dumuria upazila on Friday night. The deceased was identified as Farhad Hossain, 35, vice-president of Shovona union unit Swechchashebak Dal and son of Babar Ali of the village. Mashiur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Dumuria police station, said an altercation ensued between Farhad, president of Shovna Mosque managing committee, and one Amin Sardar over taking sand from the mosque to Amin’s house after Juma prayer. At one stage of altercation, Amin along with his supporters beat up Farhad mercilessly, leaving him critically injured. Later he was rushed to Khulna Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries around 10 pm.
JCD leader arrested in Sylhet
SYLHET:  Police in a drive arrested a local leader of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) from Chandbhoranj village in Biswanath upazila on Friday. The arrestee was identified as Sohel Samad, a leader of Dashghar union unit JCD and son of Anwar Hossain of the village. Tipped off, a team of police conducted a raid at the village around 6:30 pm and arrested Sohel, said Masud Alam Bhuiyan, sub-inspector of Biswanath Police Station. He was wanted in two murder cases, said police. 50 maunds of Jatka seized BARISAL: Members of Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) in a drive seized 50 maunds Jatka fish from two launches in the SripurRiver under Mehendiganj upazila here on Friday night. On a tip off, a team of the BCG conducted the drive on the river and seized the Jatka (banned immature hilsh fish) after searching the Dhaka-bound launches at about 8 pm. The coast guard sources said none was arrested in this connection. Later, the seized Jatka were distributed among different local madrasas and orphanages.
