At least 12 people were injured in a clash between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) at Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology (DUET) in Gazipur yesterday. Following the clashes, the DUET authorities, at an emergency meeting, decided to shut the university for an indefinite period.
Male students were asked to vacate their dormitories by yesterday evening while female by 8am on Tuesday (today), DUET Director (Students' welfare) Professor Mohammad Kamruzzaman said.
He said all academic activities, including examinations, were suspended until further notice to avoid further untoward incidents.
According to students and witnesses, the clashes ensued following an altercation between the supporters of DUET BCL president Nasir Uddin Nasir and its general secretary Rezaur Rahman Reju over occupying seats at Dr Qudrat-e-Khuda Hall and establishing supremacy on the campus yesterday afternoon.
Of the injured, Chanchal Kumar of civil engineering and Masud Rana of electrical and electronics engineering (EEE) were sent to a Gazipur hospital from where they were shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
