Mashrafe Bin Mortaza’s Comilla Victorians was considered as weakest team at least on paper when the players’ draft of BPL was completed. With no big star, apart from the Icon himself, not many one believed that they could reach the qualifier stage as the first team. Dhaka Dynamites beat them effortlessly by six wickets in the first match to fuel the belief but after two weeks of the tournament, they are the most consistent team and the first one to go to the play-off stage. It’s a completely turnaround from what was believed at the outset. The tactical nous of captain Mashrafe complemented by the franchisee owners’ dedication to the cricket and the undying effort of the cricketers made the unbelievable into believable one.
“To me it’s a 7-4 game, I mean we could play four overseas players in contrast of seven local players. So the equation is that the local players would play a vital role where the overseas players should act as supporting role. Our intention was to dominate the game with our local recruits and we planned that way,” Mashrafe explained what technical adjustments they made in order to make the team competitive.
“We never relied on our foreign recruits. We simply used them to support the local players in order to bail the side out of danger. They franchisee owner also showed a huge dedication in charging up the players. We have no problem with payments also.”
Comilla Victorians was acquired by Nafisa Kamal, daughter of former BCB and ICC president AHM Mustafa Kamal. The owners also gave Mashrafe and coach Salahuddin absolute right to take decision with regards to the team what was another reason of their overwhelming success.
