BNP,Jammat leaders to contest polls from jail

Several influential BNP and Jammat leaders now in jail or on the run might contest the upcoming municipal polls.
Party and family sources said they will run for the posts of mayor and councillor from the prison if they are not released ahead of the election.
The election to nine Bogra municipalities is due on December 30.Many of the local BNP and Jamaat leaders have been indicted in sabotage charges.
 BNP sources said the leaders and councillor candidates in prison are district unit president of Bangladesh Sewascasebok Dal and Councillor of Bogra ward no 1 Shah Mehedi Hasan Himu, District Juba Dal president and ward no 11 Councillor Shipar Al Bakhtiar, the town Juba Dal president and ward no 15 councillor Masud Rana, ward no 17 councillor BNP leader Golam Mostofa.
Jammat source said councillor candidate of ward no 8, ex-councillor Jammat leader Ersadul Bari and mayoral candidate in Kahalu Municipality Jammat leader Jahurul Islam Badsha are also in jail.
 The family members have already done all necessary formalities, including filing of their nomination papers to the returning officers.
The BNP and Jamaat candidates who are now absconding to avoid arrest include panel mayor of Bogra municipality BNP leader Parimal Chandra Das, district unit secretary of Jatiyatabadi Sangskritik Sangha (JSS) and ward councillor of no 7 Delwar Hussein Posari Hiru, Jamaat leader of ward no 12 Julfikar Ali Babu, ward no 16 councillor BNP leader Harun-ur-Rashid Shaju, ward no 21 councilor Jammat leader Ruhul Kuddus Dilu.
The party and family sources said efforts are underway to get the leaders released on bail before the election.
