The Election Commission (EC) has allegedly not cancelled the nomination papers of Khurshid Haider, an influential Awami League (AL)-nominated mayoral candidate, who is contesting the Magura municipal corporation elections with two different dates of birth and under different names.
The rival candidate has submitted a petition to returning officer Khandaker Azim Ahmed, who is also the additional deputy commissioner, to cancel his nomination papers. Azim Ahmed, however, has not responded to the petition for unknown reasons, saying the deputy commissioner will decide the matter.
According to the documents obtained by this correspondent, the AL-nominated mayoral candidate, Khurshid Haider, has submitted documents in which his date of birth and name are different.
In the birth certificate that was submitted, the AL-nominated candidate has mentioned his birthday as October 9, 1968, but his SSC certificate shows that his date of birth is April 5, 1974. In the affidavit, he has claimed that he had passed the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations.
In the birth certificate, his name is Md Khurshid Haider, but in the SSC certificate, his name is Abu Altaf Khurshid Haider. However, in the affidavit, his name is Md  Khurshid Haider Tutul.
Speaking to this correspondent, Khurshid Haider said that he was not aware of these anomalies.
Advocate Mahbubul Akbar Kollol, former science and information and communications technology affairs secretary of Magura district, said, “I told the returning officer to cancel the nomination papers, but he suggested raising the issue during the appeal.”
Despite several attempts by The Independent, both Magura deputy commissioner, Mohammad Mahbubor Rahman, and additional deputy commissioner, Khandaker Azim Ahmed, could not be reached.  EC secretary Md Sirajul Islam told The Independent that he would not make any comment without first seeing the anomalies in the name and date of birth of the candidate.
