Valid candidates 12,739: EC

After the scrutiny of the nomination papers, Election Commission (EC) yesterday announced 12,739 valid candidates in the upcoming municipality polls and cancelled 882 candidates who will avail the opportunity to appeal within three days to review the nominations.  
Of the valid candidates, 1059 are mayoral candidates, 9169 are councilor (general) candidates and 2511 are councilor (reserved for women) candidates, EC sources said.
The retuning officers cancelled 154 mayoral candidates, 572 councilor (general) candidates and 156 (councilor reserved for women) candidates.
A total of 13621 candidates submitted nomination papers to be the valid candidates, EC sources said.
Besides, four mayoral candidates are going to be elected unopposed as there is no other candidates after the scrutiny of nomination papers.
If the candidates from these four municipalities do not appeal or don’t get verdict in their favour from the appeal authority, the single candidates will be announced elected after the last date of withdrawal of nominations on December 13.
The four candidates are from Tongipara municipality under Gopalganj district, Shibchar municipality under Madaripur district, Chengarchar municipality under Chandpur district and Parshuram municipality under Feni district.
If no candidates from the valid list withdraw their nominations, the EC will hold the polls with their participation in the 234 municipalities.
