In a bid to take the country’s Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) sector into the fast lane, the first ever BPO Summit jointly organised by the ICT Division and Bangladesh Association of Call Center and Outsourcing (BACCO) begins tomorrow (Wednesday) in the capital.
The two-day long BPO Summit Bangladesh 2015 is all set to be held on December 9-10 at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in the capital.
During a press conference at the conference room of the ICT Division, Junaid Ahmed Palak, state minister for ICT, said Bangladesh has a strong potential to become the preferred destination for Business Process Outsourcing in the international market.
“This summit is being organised to attract local and foreign investors into the BPO sector. Our young generation will also get information about the growing industry through the summit”, Palak added.
Palak also said the BPO is one sector where Bangladesh has huge potential to mark significant growth. “Currently the country has been earning around $130 million from this sector and the whole amount is being earned through human resources without any investment on machineries and other things”, he said.
The state minister said that out of the global $500 billion BPO sector, our neighboring India has been earning $80 billion, the Philippines $16 billion and Srilanka $2 billion. “We have a target of earning $3 billion from this sector by 2021”, he said.
He said, every year around 2.5 lakh new young people is being added in our workforce. “This young people need employment. The BPO sector could be a place for their employment,” he said.
Palak told the press conference that the government has planned to establish 554 new BPO centre across the country. “Those centers will not only house the support centers but also training centre to create able human resources”, he said.
Speaking on the occasion, Ahmadul Hoq, president of BACCO, said that during the two day long summit, a total of 79 local and 9 international speakers would deliver their speeches in 12 sessions. “We expect attendance of more than 10 thousand IT enthusiasts in those sessions”, he said.
Hoq said Sajeeb Wazed Joy, ICT adviser to the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, will inaugurate the summit. Santiago Gutierrz, chairman of World Information Society and Service Alliance (WITSA), will also be present at the summit, he said.
