Border Guard of Bangladesh (BGB) director general Maj Gen Aziz Ahmed yesterday said drugs are not only being smuggled by land but also by air and waterways. He was speaking to the media on completion of three years as the BGB chief at the city's Pilkhana headquarters. He said although the BGB has launched some successful operations to thwart drugs smuggling, it is still a matter of concern. He added that the supply of drugs would decrease if a strict eye is kept on areas known for high drugs demand. Speaking about the integrity of BGB personnel, Ahmed said, “Not all BGB men are hundred per cent corruption-free. We're taking action against those involved in unscrupulous practices.”
About 100 BGB men have been terminated in the past three years for their involvement in smuggling and extra-marital relations, he added. Ahmed said the BGB is keeping strict vigil to stop militants from crossing the border. “We're always in touch with all our neighbouring countries in this regard,” he added.
The BGB chief said the incidents of border killings have decreased noticeably. “If people are conscious and don't try to cross the border at the dead of night for cattle smuggling, such incidents would decrease further,” he added.
About his success as the helm of the BGB, Ahmed said as many as 276 posts have been created over the last three years during his tenure. “We've also changed our war strategy in combination with the Army,” he added.
Speaking about his remarkable success in the paramilitary force, the BGB chief said for the first time, 100 women personnel would be inducted into the BGB and their training would begin from January next year.
