Oishee seeks acquittal at HC

Oishee Rahman, who was recently handed a death sentence by the trial court for killing her parents---Mahfuzur Rahman and Swapna Rahman---in 2013, filed an appeal with the High Court yesterday seeking acquittal.
In her appeal, Oishee has also sought bail from the High Court in connection with the case.
After filing the appeal, Advocate Masud Rana, counsel for Oishee, told reporters that Oishee has challenged the trial proceedings of the case saying that the speedy trial tribunal could not try a child, as Oishee was 17 years old when the murders took place.
On November 12, the Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 of Dhaka, in its verdict, sentenced Oishee Rahman to death for killing her parents. The tribunal also fined her Tk. 40,000, and two years in prison if she failed to pay the fine. In a jam-packed courtroom, judge Md Sayeed Ahmed delivered the verdict in Oishee’s presence, after which the accused broke down in tears.
The tribunal also sentenced her friend Mizanur Rahman Roni to two years rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fine of Tk. 5,000 for sheltering Oishee after the murders. Roni will remain behind bars for another month if he fails to pay the fine.
In the order, the tribunal asserted that Oishee was an “adult” when she killed her parents and hence there was no scope to consider her case softly. The court also concluded that the girl did not kill her parents in a drunken state. The murder was planned thoroughly and with the support of someone else. She was mentally sound during the murders, the tribunal said.
On August 16, 2013, Police Special Branch inspector Mahfuzur Rahman and his wife Swapna Rahman were found dead with stab wounds in their apartment in Malibagh area of the capital.
On the same day, 17-year-old Oishee surrendered at Paltan Police Station along with their domestic help Sumi.
