At least three people were killed and nine others hurt in separate road accidents in Jamalpur and Noakhali districts yesterday. In Jamalpur, two sisters were killed and four others injured in a road accident on Jamalpur-Dewanganj road at Kompopur area in sadar upazila yesterday morning. The deceased were identified as Pankha Begum ,60, of Bahadurpur village in Islampur upazila and her younger sister Hawa Begum,58, of Sajimara village in Bakshiganj upazila of the district.
Police said the accident took place when Dewanganj-bound fish loaded pick-up van from Jamalpur town collided with a CNG- run auto rickshaw on Jhainai Bridge at 7:15 am. Auto-rickshaw driver Badal, 40, and passengers -- Pankha Begum and Hawa Begum, Lakkhindar,50, Osman Ali,40, and Sahijal,60 -- sustained injuries in the accident. They were rushed to Jamalpur General Hospital, where the attending doctors declared Pankha Begum and Hawa Begum dead.
Police detained pick-up van helper Chanchal; but its driver Momin managed to flee. Sub-inspector, Joynal Abedin said the auto rickshaw was coming to Jamalpur town from Islampur upazila. He said due to thick fog the accident took place. A case was registered with Jamalpur police station. In Noakhali, a youth was killed and five others were injured in a road accident at Sonapur zero point area in Sadar upazila yesterday morning.
