Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid yesterday called for changing patriarchal mindset to end violence against women, reports BSS. ”As patriarchal mindset exists strongly in society, it should be changed to stop violence on women,” he told the “Suriday Utsab Dhaka” held on the premises of Bangla Academy here. The daily Samakal, a leading Bengli Daily organized the “Suriday Utsab Dhaka” with the theme of “Tarunya Rukhbe Sahingsata (youthfulness will resist violence)”.
Editor of the daily Samakal Golam Sarwar, Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique, Vice Chancellor of Jagannath University Dr Mizanur Rahman, Director General of Bangla Academy Shamsuzzaman Khan, litterateurs and cultural personalities, among others, spoke on the occasion. Nahid said alongside lunching massive awareness campaign to fight violence and repression against women, strict enforcement of law has to be ensured to combat this social menace. Despite some dismal pictures of violence on women, he said, Bangladesh has impressively advanced in the field of women empowerment as womenfolk in both rural and urban settings are participating in various development process. ”We have achieved gender parity in both primary and secondary education in 2012. This achievement drew global attention as deadline of fulfilling the target of gender equality has been fixed at 2015,” Nahid added. Various programmes - bringing out procession, dance and music performance, displaying cartoon - have been included in the Suriday utsab to create social movement to end violence against women.
