Fuel oil Adulteration

Ministry orders probe

STAFF REPORTER

The Ministry Of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources has asked the BPC (Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation) and the three state-run fuel distribution companies to thoroughly probe the allegations of irregularities in distribution and adulteration of fuel oil across the country.
The instruction follows the publishing of a report on alleged irregularities by The Independent and broadcast of a report on the same issue by Independent Television yesterday.
When contacted over the matter, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid Bipu said they have taken the matter very seriously and have ordered full probes into the allegations.
“We had earlier heard of such anomalies, but only now, after publishing of the news reports, the situation has become clear to us. I will take necessary action in this regard,” he said.

The state minister also held a meeting with the chairman of petrobangla Istiaque Ahmed and BPC chairman SM Badruddoza where the issue of adulteration of oil and other anomalies came up, said sources. He also sought all related documents on inquiries made over irregularities at filling stations across the country.
The Independent carried out an investigation on more than 200 filling stations across the country, and exposed alarming statistics of fuel adulteration and its sale in the black market.
Sale of adulterated fuel oil in filling stations across the country has become rampant, posing a massive threat to automobile engines, and causing huge revenue loss for the government.
An investigation carried out by The Independent reveals that a good number of filling stations in nexus with some private sector refineries are illegally selling substandard fuel oil. Many of the filling stations keep their business running without procuring any oil from the BPC-authorised dealers.
In the last five months till September this year, according to BPC and energy ministry officials, the volume of illegal trade of diesel and petrol stands at Tk 1,300 crore, and the government lost Tk 300 crore as revenue during this period.
