Leaders and workers of Monohardi upazila BNP and its front organisations have demanded cancellation of nomination of the mayoral candidate, who they called a close aide of a BNP reformist. Monohardi upazila BNP organised a protest meeting and press briefing at Narandi in Monohardi upazila of Narsingdi district yesterday morning. Speakers there said Mahmudul Haque, a close associate of former MP and BNP reformist Sarder Shakhawat Hossain Bakul, received the party nomination for mayoral election in Monohardi pourashava. Bakul was suspended from BNP politics in 2007, they said. Among others, Abdul Based Molla Bhutto, Babul Molla, Advocate Abdul Hannan, Biplob and candidate Abdul Khaleque spoke on the occasion. The speakers urged BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir to immediately change the Monohardi mayoral nomination and nominate Abdul Khaleque, a genuine BNP leader. When contacted, Mahmudul Haque said he is working under leadership of BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia. “Khaleda Zia has given me nomination and I am the BNP candidate,” he said.
