The BNP chairperson, Khaleda Zia, will seek a fair solution to the outstanding issues, including the Teesta water sharing agreement, during her meeting with the visiting Indian prime minister Narendra Modi, scheduled today, BNP leaders said.
The former Bangladesh premier will also focus on the latest developments in the political arena and seek cooperation from the Indian government, considering it is the largest democratic neighbour of Bangladesh, they said.
The meeting between Narendra Modi and Khaleda Zia will take place at 4.00 pm, at Hotel Sonargaon, where Modi is putting up, sources at the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office said. It is learnt, a six to eight-member delegation, led by Khaleda Zia, will reach Sonargaon Hotel at 3.45 pm, for the meeting.
The other possible members of the delegation are: BNP standing committee members—Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Tariqul Islam, Brig.-Gen. (Retd) ASM Hannan Shah, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan and Nazrul Islam Khan, party vice-chairman, Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury, chairperson’s adviser, Reaz Rahman, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, and Sabihuddin Ahmed.
Sources said the BNP delegation will also raise the issue of the “lopsided January 5 general polls” and demand to hold a free and fair election under a non-partisan government.
The delegation will also focus on repression of opposition leaders and activists, by law enforcing agencies, and emphasise the need for a neutral election through talks, to resolve the current political stalemate, sources added.
The BNP delegation will also discuss different bilateral issues, including the Teesta water sharing proposal, reducing trade deficit, and a halt to border killing. Khaleda Zia will thank Modi for implementing the Land Boundary Agreement (LBA) and appreciate the introduction of positive politics in the South Asian countries. She will also hand over some gifts to the Indian premier, from her party’s end.
Meanwhile, ASM Hannan Shah, yesterday, said they would seek Modi’s cooperation in establishing democracy in Bangladesh. Addressing a discussion meeting at the Jatiya Press Club, to mark the death anniversary of late president Ziaur Rahman, he termed Modi as a symbol of democracy and hoped that he would cooperate in restoring democracy in the country, in the interest of democracy.
