NARAYANGANJ: Traffic congestion on city thoroughfares has turned acute nowadays, causing immense sufferings to commuters on a daily basis, reports UNB. Local residents have blamed the negligence of Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) and Traffic Department for the unabated traffic congestion in the city. Traffic gridlock, especially during the morning and evening peak hours, causes immense sufferings to commuters every day. The problem intensifies at Chasara intersection, Jamtola , 2 no rail gate areas.
Many think the increase in the number of rickshaws and other vehicles, much more than the roads can accommodate, is the main cause behind the tailbacks. However, there are no solid statistics about how many rickshaws are plying on the city roads and clogging them up. Minhajul Abedin, a resident of Chasara area, said local authorities have always said they are working relentlessly to improve the district’s traffic situation but in reality, no efforts have been seen in the last four years to construct any flyovers or foot-over bridges to ease the traffic congestion. Although the traffic congestion problems have been continuing for quite some time now, nothing fruitful has been done so far to improve the situation, said Farida Begum, another resident of the city. It has been known that Tk 40 lakh was allocated for improving the district’s traffic situation ahead of Eid-ul-Azha and Durga Puja. But in reality, the money has not been used in any traffic easing measures, alleged local people.
The traffic tailbacks in the district’s bustling Chashara area has turned from bad to worse recently and the traffic police have failed in managing extra traffic in the area. Some local residents added that illegal parking and reckless driving are also contributing to the city’s deteriorating traffic crisis. They said the hard hit victims of traffic tailbacks are students, who tend to arrive late for school and miss out crucial a examination, that hampers their academic progress. Assistant Police Super (Traffic) Md. Badrul Alam Molla told the news that Chashara is one of the main road links in the district, hence almost all vehicles tend to ply via this route. Some parts of the link road are already damaged that give rise to traffic jams. He said, the traffic police department is trying their level best to ease traffic flow in the city.
