BNP leader arrested in Savar
Police arrested a BNP leader from his residence at Bank Colony in Savar municipality area on Saturday night. The arrestee was identified as Advocate Nazim Uddin, law affairs secretary of Savar municipality BNP. Family members of Nazim alleged that police arrested him without any warrant. Police went to Nazims house in the area around 11:30pm after his return from Dhaka around 11:15pm. The law enforcers forced Nazim into boarding the police van as he argued asking for the warrant against his arrest to be produced. Family members also said Nazim was a close friend of Badiuzzam Badi, BNP-backed mayor candidate in the upcoming municipal election.
2 die in separate incidents
A worker and a CNG-auto-rickshaw driver were killed in separate incidents in Chittagong today. The deceased were identified as worker Monir Ahmed, 47, son of late Abul Hossain, hailed from Charlakkhya village under citys Karnaphuli Thana and auto-rickshaw driver Mohammad Mohiuddin, 22, son of Jebol Mallik, hailed from Chandanaish Sadar area under Chandanaish upazila of the district. Police said Monir was electrocuted while working at a shop at Charlakkhya village under citys Karnaphuli Thana around 9.30am while auto-rickshaw driver Mohiuddin was critically injured after a speedy bus dashed him in front of BGC Trust University in Chandanaish upazila around 8am. The victims were rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where attending doctors declared them dead, said Nayek Mohammad Hamid of CMCH police outpost.
Road mishap kills 2
Two people were killed in a road accident in Pererbazar area of Sylhet on Saturday night. The deceased were identified as Rafique Miah, 45, a resident of Pirerbazar area and another was Babul alias Modon, 30, resident of citys Tikarpara area. Police said, a stone laden truck pushed two passer0-by at around 10pm while they were standing in the Pirerbazar auto stand, leaving Rafique dead on the spot and Babul died on way to the Osmani Medical College Hospital. After the incident local barricaded the Sylhet Tamabil road for one hour. On information police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control said, Nizam Uddin, officer-in charge of Shaporan police station.
Body recovered in Ctg
Police recovered the body of a man from a pond at Syedpur village of Popadia union under Boalkhali upazila of Chittagong on Saturday morning. The body was identified as SM Jubaiyer, 45, son of Advocate Mozaffar Hossain, hailed from the said area. Boalkhali police after receiving information from the locals, recovered the body and sent it to the morgue for autopsy, said Sub-Inspector (SI) Dhormendu Das of Double Mooring police station. Police also recovered a bicycle from the spot. Police suspect that Jubaiyer might have fallen into the pond and drowned.
Bangabandhu Memorial Trust meets
A meeting of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Memorial Trust was held at Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi in the capital on Saturday evening. Chairperson of the trust Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina presided over the meeting. PMs Deputy Press Secretary Ashraful Alam Khokan told BSS that the meeting reviewed various activities of the trust and decided to carry forward its different projects faster.
Members of the trust attended the meeting. Earlier, the members extended their heartiest congratulations to the Prime Minister by presenting a flower bouquet for receiving UNs highest environmental accolade Champions of the Earth and the ICT Sustainable Development Award of the International Telecommunication Union.
