State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroze Chumki yesterday said the present government has taken pragmatic steps so that no child in Bangladesh would be deprived of getting educational facilities, reports BSS. "The government is working sincerely to ensure education for all as our aim is to build the children as skilled and efficient citizens with world standard," she said while speaking at the National Early Childhood Development (ECD) Conference 2015 at Gulshan in the capital.
Terming the adoption of the 'Comprehensive Early Childhood Development Policy- 2013' of the Government as a milestone, she said now the challenge is to implement the policy fully. On government's progress in the last five years, the state minister said, "In the last five years, the child mortality rate has come down significantly with 41 child death per thousand while infant mortality rate is 32 per thousand." She said the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Target 4.2 on Early Childhood Development has been adopted at the United Nations in September with its aim to "ensure that all girls and boys have access to quality childhood development, care and pre-primary education so that they are ready for primary education." The Bangladesh Early Childhood Development Network (BEN) organised the programme with the executive director of 'Campaign for Popular Education' Rasheda K Chowdhury in the chair. Over 170 early childhood programme personnel from NGOs, government agencies, academic institutions and development partners joined in the daylong conference.
Among others, Bikash Kishore Das, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, Faizul Kabir, Joint secretary, Ministry of Primary and Mass Education. UNIICEF deputy representative Louise Mrono spoke on the occasion.
