Mushfiq willfully hands over captaincy to Afridi

Sports Reporter

The Sylhet Super Stars’ surprising turnaround coincided with Shahid Afridi replacing Mushfiqur Rahim as captain for the remainder of the tournament. Officials said Mushfiqur himself was keen to leave the captaincy to focus on his batting and wicket-keeping as the team was in the spiral of defeat, losing five out of six.
Rumours were rife that Mushfiqur Rahim will be relieved from the captaincy and it was materialised in the match against Barisal Bulls yesterday.
“Mushfiqur wasn’t comfortable with the captaincy. The team owner also talked about it. That’s why I took the captaincy,” said Shahid Afridi during the toss.
Sylhet coach Sarwar Imran said the captaincy was handed according to the wishes of Mushfiqur.
“As far as I am concerned Mushfiqur himself told Afridi to take over. Afridi however tried to convince him to go on with the captaincy. Last night owner called us in a meeting where the decision was materialised,” Imran said.
“It’s a huge pressure for him. We lost some matches by the margin of one and six runs. People said luck wasn’t with us but it’s true we couldn’t play well. We didn’t have any finisher also,” he said. “Our decision was that Mushfiqur and Ravi Bopara will assist Afridi in the field.”
Sylhet started the BPL by creating debate as they fielded two overseas players in their opening match against Chittagong Vikings.
