Barisal Bulls, the most consistent team in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), received the most embarrassing treatment when they were shot out for tournament lowest 59 to concede a humiliating nine-wicket defeat to Sylhet Super Stars yesterday at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
The struggling Super Stars stayed alive in the competition with this terrific turnaround, something which was difficult to fathom given the performance of the both teams in the tournament. It seemed the luck shifted to Sylhet with the change of the captaincy as Shahid Afridi led the side, replacing Mushfiqur Rahim.
However the excitement was understandably high given the T20’s two super stars was locked horn in the same match. While Afridi showed a glimpse in Sylhet’s last match that what he could do, expectation was high on Gayle to deliver his entertaining knock. The hope was not realised with Gayle made just eight with one six as Barisal were bowled out for 59 what Sylhet overhauled in 11.2 overs making 62 for one. Nurul Hasan Sohan completed the emphatic victory with a boundary to remain not out on 23.
Opener Junaid Siddique was unbeaten on 34 and played with huge serenity when it seemed Barisal could damage much to make the easy task tougher one. Mohammad Sami took out Dilshan Munaweera for naught in the first over to indicate so but Junaid, aided by Sohan dashed their hopes of making the things complicated.
With a considerable amount of moistures were seen on the surface, Afridi didn’t hesitate to bowl once he won the toss. His bowlers justified his decision right, embarrassing Gayle and his opening partner Evin Lewis with seam movement and swing. Evin Lewis was the first to go when Sohail Tanvir lured with a short delivery. Lewis’s pull couldn’t cross the boundary but went into the safe hand of Abdur Razzak.
Gayle still managed to hit his trademark six, to indicate of giving the bowlers a wave of morbid depression.
But it wasn’t his day. Mohammad Shahid took the sweet revenge of dismissing him in the immediate next delivery as Gayle went after him for consecutive second time. Gayle’s dismissal prompted a massive collapse from which they could never recover. Sylhet bowlers got the momentum and bowled well in tandem.
After Tanvir’s show it was Rubel Hossain who removed Rony Talukdar and Mahmudullah Riyad to keep them cornered and then it was Ravi Bopara who extended the agony with triple strike. He got rid of Sabbir Rahman Rumman, Sekugge Prasanna and Mehedi Maruf in his one over to shatter Barisal hope of making at least a moderate score. That only two batsmen – Mohammad Sami (16) and Evin Lewis (12) could reach double digit figure would tell the tale of huge embarrassment of Bulls. Bopara claimed three for 12 while Afridi and Shahid snapped up two wickets apiece. It was Sylhet’s second victory in seventh match while Barisal’s second defeat in the same number of matches.
