Awami League joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif yesterday said some 71 party men are still vying for the mayoral posts in the upcoming municipality election as independent candidates, reports UNB. However, the party is hoping that the rebel contestants would withdraw their candidature before December 13, he said. “Some 71 party men took nomination papers to contest independently. Four to five of them have already withdrawn their names from the race, and we hope others would follow them before December13,” Hanif said.at a press briefing, held at AL president’s political office at Dhanmondi in the city. He termed BNP’s objection against the Election Commission as illogical and unacceptable, Hanif said, “BNP took part in the five city polls under the current election commission. Now the party [BNP] says the present EC is not fair...What does the BNP want really?”
