The bowlers are finally going to be hit with a heavy wave of morbid depression in Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). Christopher Henry Gayle, popularly known as Chris Gayle, has already expressed his ambition of hitting as many sixes as he could do in the tournament. He will get down to his business today with his side Barisal Bulls taking on Sylhet Super Stars, the bottom table team at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
Someone simply shouldn’t consider the expression that he stated upon his arrival, as exaggeration. He had already proved in the last two editions of BPL that what he is capable of doing. If still someone wants to deem the statement as hyperbole, he should do it his own peril.
“There was no message for the bowlers. I have done so much of damages already so I don’t know what to expect,” Gayle said, replied to query whether he has any message for the bowlers. The statement itself should shiver the bowlers down the spine. Gayle in fact needn’t tell anything, his bat always talks.
He is the mercenary of T20 cricket. All over the world, including the highly competitive IPL, he showed his six hitting prowess, sending the world class bowlers in receiving end. A simple stat of his T20 credential: He has hit the highest number of sixes (586), far distance from the next best of his compatriot Keiron Pollard’s 388, he holds the fastest hundred’s record (30 balls), he holds the highest number of centuries (16), he is the highest run-getter (8824 in 22 matches), he has the highest average among the batsman who played at least 30 innings. When a single batsman holds almost all of the records in a particular format, he is the greatest in his own rights. Gayle has also good records in BPL as he hit three centuries, the highest by any batsman in the tournament’s history.
Why bowlers shouldn’t fear for the most? Only one thing could give them some respite from the sleepless night. He is coming off an injury lay-off and didn’t bat since July. The batting after a long period could limit his supreme aggression only. “I won’t put so much strain on the body. But if the situation require that I need to bowl an over or two then fine. But you don’t want to overwork you body. You want to come back a bit stronger and build the momentum in the body and get the feel of what you
are doing.” But the relentless question was “what motivated him to do well in this format around the world” to which he said, his intention is to make impact on the people, to entertain the crowd.
“Wherever I travel in the world, I just want to make impact on the people. So whatever tournament I play in I try to leave an impact there and make sure everybody is satisfied. It’s not going to happen all the time but that’s my objective, that my aim to make all happy. People pay a lot of money to come and watch games, they want to be entertained so that’s my objective which is to entertain the fans as much as possible.”
Without Gayle’s presence, no Twenty20 tournament couldn’t be colourful and spicy. Gayle also knew that as he said, “Sure, that’s the way I am. I am the person who tries to make things a bit spicy and make people enjoy. Since I arrived even the team wants me to see score. So yes I am under pressure coming back from the injury but I am accustomed to these things. I will try to build as quickly as possible and get back to the middle.”
He plays for people’s cause, that’s why he is the people’s champion. Gayle also is grateful to his fans. When asked what makes today’s Gayle, he replied without any reservation, “You make Gayle.”
