At least ten students of Ziaur Rahaman hall of Dhaka University were injured in an attack, allegedly by Bangladesh Chattra League (BCL) activists, yesterday as they were late to attend a pre-scheduled BCL programme to mark the 52nd death anniversary of Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy. The injured were identified as 2nd year students Ashiq of Sociology department, Alamgir of Bangla, Liton of Philosophy, Juel of English, Fuad and Firoz of Management and Information System, Kamal of IER, Sahadat and Sagor of Finance and a first year student Mosarrof.
Among them, Ashiq was seriously injured and admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. According to witnesses, BCL Zia hall unit Acting Secretary Boni Amin Molla and other party activists beat up the students. Boni Amin Molla had asked the general students of the hall to gather in the guestroom yesterday at 7 am to join the programme of paying tributes to the graveyard of three national leaders. As some of the students were late to attend the guestroom, Amin and other BCL activists assaulted them brutally with sticks and other local weapons for being later. Admitting the incident, Boni Amin said, “We look after our juniors and we love them. We also punish them sometimes.”
“We have to deal with all of their problems” he added. Amin, however, claimed that Ashiq accidentally slipped on the guestroom and got hurt on his own. When contacted over the matter, Dhaka University unit BCL General Secretary Motaher Hossain Prince told The Independent, “The students were involved in a dispute during playing badminton on Friday night. As a consequence, Amin and others, being seniors, warned them in the guest room in the morning”.
Meanwhile, at least three BCL activists of Sir AF Rahman Hall unit were injured in a factional clash over establishing supremacy on Dhaka University campus on Friday night. The injured were identified as BCL activists Mahmudul Hasan Tusher, Humayun Kabir and Abul Basher.
Hall sources said there had been a dispute between the followers of DU unit BCL president Abid Al Hasan and its central General Secretary SM Zakir Hossain over occupying seats at Sir AF Rahman Hall. The clash ensued following an altercation between the supporters of the two groups of the hall. At one stage, around 20 supporters of Imran, loyal of BCL DU unit president also former Hall Secretary Ruhul Amin, vandalized Masud Alam and his fellow’s room who are supporters of BCL Central Secretary Zakir Hossain and beat up the three. After the incident, the injured were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.
