Climate deal must be with 1.5 degree: Groups

UNB

Environmental groups representing MVCs (most vulnerable countries) and LDCs (least developed countries) at a press conference in Paris on Friday said climate deal must be with 1.5 degree Celsius and with an institutional mechanism to address loss and damages, reports UNB. The press conference was jointly organised by BAPA, BIPNetCCBD, BCCJF, CCDF, CCDB, CDP, CSRL, EquityBD and EFJB of Bangladesh which are participating in the Paris Climate Conference, according to a message received here from Paris on yesterday afternoon.
Mrinal Kanti Tripura of BIPNetCCBD moderated the press conference while Sharmind Neelormi of CSRL read out the keynote paper. Among others, Tettet Lauron from Ibon International of the Philippines, Shamsuddoha of CPRD and Mizanur Rahman Bijoy of NCCB spoke at the press conference.
In his address, Shamsuddoha reiterated that the developed countries must fulfill their commitment on financing annually $ 100 billion from 2020, and there must be a roadmap on finance for the pre-2020 period too. “It’s easily possible if developed countries reduce their arms and war budget.”
Tettet Lauren said the developed countries must take historical responsibility for their carbon emission in the past and plundering of resources through colonialism and new liberal policies at the moment. “They must have to pay the climate debt,” she added.
