Although harvesting of T-Aman paddy has started amid much enthusiasm in eight upazilas of Jessore district but the farmers are not quite happy with the market prices of their produce.
The farmers are facing difficulties in getting labourers to reap the paddy. They fear that the production cost of the paddy might soar because of the higher charges of day labourers. The farmers in Sarsha upazila complained that they are spending much on harvesting because of higher labour charges. They said labour cost has been increasing day by day. Earlier, Tk 300-Tk 350 and lunch were offered daily to a labour as charge, but it has now gone up to Tk500 plus food.
According to Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) sources, a total of 5,260,000 hectares of land was targeted for T-Aman cultivation aiming to produce 13,097,000 tonnes of paddy. However, the production of T-Aman paddy may exceed the target due to favorable weather.
