Dense fog disrupted ferry services on the Padma at the two ferry terminals of Shimulia and Paturia yesterday (Friday). Ferry operators on the Shimulia-Kewrakandi route had to stop movement of boats for three hours from 4:00am, affecting services on the Dhaka-southwestern routes. The meteorological department said light to moderate fog is likely to continue over the river basins today (Saturday). The sun was virtually hidden by the fog and smog, with a partly cloudy sky throughout the day. Cool winds blew from the north-east and the north, indicating that winter was finally at the doorstep. It brought the mercury down to a maximum of 27.5 degrees Celsius in the capital, with Syedpur recording the lowest minimum of 14.8C. The met office said the night was going to be cooler. It will continue to stay that way a couple of days. After a light rain on December 12 to 13, the mercury will start plunging downwards when the fog clears.
