Myanmar has recently submitted a petition with the United Nations making a claim on a portion of Bangladesh’s maritime area. Bangladesh, however, has already protested the Myanmar claim. “As soon as we could know about Myanmar’s claim, we lodged a protest,” a senior foreign ministry official told The Independent. Myanmar submitted its petition claiming Bangladesh’s maritime area in July, he said, adding that Bangladesh submitted a counter petition, urging the UN to reject Myanmar’s unlawful claim. Myanmar’s claim on continental shelf of the Bay of Bengal is not in line with the verdicts of the international courts that resolved maritime disputes among Bangladesh, Myanmar and India, said the official. In the verdicts, it was clearly stated as to which country will get how much maritime area, he said, adding that nobody can claim any area beyond what the courts have awarded. But, he said, “Myanmar exactly did that and made claim on areas which legally belonged to Bangladesh and India.
