A total of 1,223 aspirants have filed their nomination papers for mayoral posts while 9,798 for councillor posts and 2, 668 in reserved councillor posts for women to contest the December 30 polls to 235 municipalities across the country Of them, the ruling Awami League has fielded its candidates in all the 235 pourasabhas, while a large number of AL leaders, as rebel candidates, have also submitted their nomination papers, apparently in violation of their party decision. The BNP, on the other hand, has nominated 232 official candidates for the mayoral posts and they are also facing a number of rebels in various municipalities. The commission will begin scrutinizing the nominations today, as per the EC schedule.
The aspirants, on Thursday, submitted the nomination papers for the country’s first ever municipal elections to be held under political party symbol for the mayoral posts. Meanwhile, the Election Commission will sit with the law enforcement agencies on December 19 to finalise security strategies and measures for the municipal elections. The meeting will be held at BIAM auditorium in the capital, EC secretary Sirazul Islam said. Representatives from different law enforcement agencies, including police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Border Guard of Bangladesh (BGB), Coast Guard and Ansar, intelligence agencies, the Armed Forces Division and the returning officers will take part in the meeting with Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad in the chair.
In another development, two mayoral aspirants, yesterday, submitted separate applications to the EC against the returning officer of Daudkandi in Comilla, calming that the returning officer did not receive their nomination papers. The aspirants are— M Shajhan Mia and Nazma Akter. They requested the chief election commissioner to take legal action against the returning officer and take necessary steps for accepting their nominations.
