US?CONGRESSIONAL BRIEFING on human rights in bangladesh

Dhaka finds inconsistency

UNB

Bangladesh has responded to ‘inconsistency’ of some remarks made in the congressional briefing in Washington on ‘Human Rights in Bangladesh’ with facts saying the discussion should have covered all aspects, reports UNB. Deputy Chief of Mission in Washington Mahbub Hassan Saleh clarified a number of points during the briefing which was open for public and media. The briefing was arranged by Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission, a bipartisan caucus of the US Congress, which promotes, defends and advocates internationally recognised human rights norms in a non-partisan manner.
“My point was very clear. The two (SQ Chowdhury and Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mojaheed) were convicted war criminals,” he told UNB over phone mentioning that the discussants were saying ‘two opposition leaders have been executed.’
Mahbub Hassan, now the chargé d' affaires of Bangladesh Embassy in Washington, also said, “We must not call them opposition leaders as their primary identity was war criminals. They committed heinous crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.”
He said the discussants did not talk about two important issues and informed the panelists that in the name of so-called blockade by BNP-Jamaat, their activists killed more than 100 people, including women and children by throwing patrol bombs. “These people were human beings. When we talk about human rights, we must talk about the violation of human rights,” he said.
No one of the panelist did talk about the brutal killings, Mahbub Hassan said adding that they saw the conditions of injured or diseased who visited the hospitals. “I felt sad about it.”
The diplomat also said he was sad to see that no one of the panelists did talk anything about a convicted killer of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman who has been living in the USA and Bangladesh has long been requesting for the killer’s repatriation.
Without mentioning name, he said a speaker in the briefing said ‘one financial institution’ refused to fund one of the biggest infrastructure project in Bangladesh.
