Rangpur misread character of wicket

Md Abu Talha Sarker, Ctg

Rangpur Riders coach Shane Jurgensen had no reservation to admit that they misjudged the character of the wicket for which they paid the price with a six-wicket defeat to Barisal Bulls. He said it wasn’t the wicket to play aggressive brand of the cricket but his players went for shots that caused their wickets at regular interval.
“We didn’t assess the wicket well, and probably played a bit too aggressive. You have to play like that in T20s but we look back now at how we lost the wickets, we just needed a few more runs,” Jurgensen who was the coach of Bangladesh just one and half a year ago told the reporters after the match.
“When you walk out there, it is bat against ball. You have to play and see it as it comes. We have to look at how we assess the pitch. Nature of T20 cricket is that you can lose the game in the first six overs. The team that makes the less mistakes wins the game in such a
short game.”
The Australian pointed out that they needed bit more runs on the board to be competitive in the match even though it wasn’t the wicket to produce 170 or 180.
“We speak about adapting to conditions. We didn’t do that today. It wasn’t a 170 wicket but we didn’t play all that smartly unfortunately. It is disappointing with the amount of talent we have in our line-up. Another 10-15 runs could have been a big difference now in the end result.”
While Jurgensen reckoned the first six overs of the game determined the course of match, Al-Amin Hossain, the best performer of the game also echoed the same sentiment. “The first six overs were crucial. We tried to rule the match from the outset and got some crucial wickets at that moment. That tilted the momentum towards us,” he said.
“I personally believe if I can hit the ball on top of length or on top, I can get many wickets. The batsmen’s tendency was to score as much as possible during that point, so I stick to my work ethics and became successful. Also the wicket was some sort of wet, so there was bit help from that.” He got the wicket of Soumya Sarkar and Shakib Al Hasan on his first over and it strangled Riders to such extent that they could never recover. Al-Amin gave the pitch a credit for getting their wickets.
