of people with disabilities’

Speakers at a discussion meeting yesterday said, “The person with disabilities are not isolated part of the society and they can also help in the country’s development.” They underscored the need for ensuring fundamental rights to the people with disabilities for their mainstreaming in the society. The discussants said that the society has set up an undeclared barrier on the disabled children and neglects these children so much that their parents often find it hard to attend social programmes or lead a normal life with their children. They further said these types of people can prove their ability at any work if they are given the opportunity. They emphasised the support of physical and emotional cares for critical intelligence and brain development of children.
The speakers made the remarks while addressing a discussion marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities held at the conference room of Officer’s Club under Sadar police station in the city. Khulna District Administration and Department of Social Welfare, Khulna jointly arranged the discussion aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilise support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.
Administrator of Khulna Zila Parishad Sheikh Harunur Rashid addressed the function as chief guest. Deputy Director of Department of Social Welfare, Khulna Sheikh Md Abdul Hamid presided over the function. Other speakers said the audience that a large number of the country’s total population is suffering from various physical and mental disorders, but the state level treatment facilities for the mentally and physically challenged patients is very limited and underscored the need for uplifting the scopes to cope with the situation. Speakers said that many children lagged behind in different curricular and extra-curricular fields due to lack of mental development. They underscored the need for collective efforts of all government and non-government organisations concerned about bringing back disabled people to normal life. A number of government and non-government officers, civil society members, NGO personalities and local journalists were attended the discussion.
