An activist of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was killed in ‘crossfire’ between police and criminals in the early hours yesterday at Bandar cremation ground on the outskirts of Meherpur town. The deceased was identified as Ramjan Sheikh, 42, son of late Amir Sheikh of village Rajnagar under sadar upazila of the district. He was an activist of BNP and had seven cases of sabotage filed against him in 2013, according to police. Ahsan Habib, Officer-in-charge of Meherpur Sadar Police Station said, Ramjan was held by police at 8 pm on Sunday and as per his confessional statement Ramjan was taken to Bandar cremation area to recover his firearms. At that time, his associates ambushed the police team and opened fire. Police opened fire in response and Ramjan was injured in crossfire. He was taken to Meherpur General Hospital where doctors declared him dead. Police seized one LG shutter gun, two rounds of bullets and a local-made weapon from the spot.
The wife of the deceased, Sharifa Begum, however claimed her husband was picked up by police on Saturday morning and not Sunday.
