As a dark phase of Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) was staged in Chittagong two years back, the doubt grew longer once Chittagong Vikings conceded 98 runs in the last seven overs which steered Barisal Bulls post a respectable 172 for seven.
The Chittagong bowlers who bowled beautifully to leave the opponent a meager 63 for five in 12th over, leaked runs in abundance, a couple of catches were put down, and the lazy run-out of Chittagong’s Pakistan recruit Kamran Akmal in pursuit of big chase also disappointed the home crowd.
Chittagong’s Zimbabwe all-rounder Elton Chigumbura gave 38 runs in two overs including 22 in the penultimate over in which there was a high full toss ‘no ball’ that went for five runs. He also sent down three wide deliveries.
While those incidents created a commotion, Vikings captain Tamim Iqbal insisted they played fair cricket where there was no opportunity to raise any doubt.
“We played bad cricket. The batsmen including me couldn’t apply well. In cricket such things might be happened. We should never think that there is any doubt if anybody plays bad cricket. Everybody is good and everybody played fair cricket,” Tamim said after the match yesterday.
About Chigumbura he said, “He was just asking where to bowl. What I wanted that didn’t happen the opposite happened. But honestly speaking you can’t just blame a bowler, but we could have done other things better.”
“I thought the body language was good from the start actually. First six overs, at least till the eleventh over it was really good, when we started dropping catches and missing run-outs we were coming down from then on.”
About the dismissal of Akmal, Tamim said, “The way Kamran Akmal got out I can only say that that was a school boy error.”
