State minister Shahriar, 7 others get death threats

Eight people including State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam and former Rajshahi mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton were threatened with death in a letter allegedly sent by Ansar-Al-Islam to a local daily newspaper in Rajshahi.
The sender, claiming he is representing Ansar-Al-Islam, the Bangladesh chapter of al-Qaeda in the Indian Sub-Continent, in the letter reportedly threatened to kill the eight politicians and eminent persons of Rajshahi. Those others given death threats in the letter are Rajshahi University Vice-Chancellor Muhammad Mizanuddin, writer Hasan Azizul Haque, Managing Editor of Daily Sunshine Yunus Ali, DIG of police’s Rajshahi Range Iqbal Bahar, former Rajshahi Education Board chairman Abul Hayat and the Awami League’s Rajshahi metropolitan unit General Secretary Dablu Sarkar.
In the two-page computer typed letter sent through the government postal service to daily newspaper Sunshine, the sender said that each of the targeted persons would be killed to establish the ‘deen’ of Allah and his prophet. There are many other businessmen, and teachers like AKM Shafiul Islam (who was killed earlier) on their hit list, says the letter.
In the letter, it was said that the persons on their hit list are enemies of Allah, his prophet (SM) and Islam. The letter says that their group is expanding fast as the number of learned religious people joining them was increasing. It says, they have already begun working in Rajshahi region and they are publishing the hit list in continuation of their regular activities against the enemies of Islam.
The sender identified himself as Mufti Abdullah Ashraf, but the name of Professor Hobibur Rahman, Principal of Rajshahi Government College, was printed in the sender’s line.
When contacted over the matter, Assistant Commissioner Shusanto Chandra Roy said the matter was brought to the notice of the police and they have started working on the issue though no complaint was filed so far.
