The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Sunday arrested four members of the banned Islamist militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) from Airport and Khilgaon areas of the capital, police sources said.
The arrested militants have connections with the Pakistani intelligence agency, the police claimed.
The arrested were identified as Idris Sheikh, Mostofa Zaman, Md Mukul Shorif and Md Salam. They were arrested as part of two separate drives.
While addressing a press conference at DMP Media Centre in the city, DB joint commissioner Monirul Islam said the JMB men visited Pakistan several times and had links with Pakistan’s intelligence agency. He disclosed that Idris Sheikh himself has visited Pakistan 48 times.
He claimed that the four arrested JMB activists, especially Idris Sheikh, had close links with Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) of Pakistan. He had secret relations with a female officer of a high commission in Dhaka, the DB official claimed.
Idris Sheikh went to Pakistan via India in 1985 and married a Pakistani woman in 1990. He also participated in the 2002 Pakistan national elections under the banner of the Pakistan Muslim Alliance. He returned to the country in 2007 and later joined the militant outfit JMB, the official disclosed.
Through a spy phone, which is different from any ordinary phone, he communicated with a top official of a foreign intelligence agency, said the DB boss.
The militants were also involved in anti-government activities with the intention of creating anarchic conditions to force the elected government to step down.
The top JMB militants were planning to kill several important persons to destabilise the government, added Monirul Islam.
Of the other arrestees, Mukul Sharif, was involved in human trafficking, while Md Salam is a trader and of Bihari origin. Mostafa Zaman had worked as a traffic inspector at Pakistan International Airlines.
The DB also seized 26 Jihadi books, three passports, five mobile phone handsets, including a spy phone, 4,000 Pakistani rupees, 1,500 Indian rupees, 1,600 Jordanian dollars and 1,300 Bahraini dollars.
