Fugitive ex-SI captured, sent back to jail

A former police sub-inspector (SI), who escaped police custody from a Dhaka court on Sunday, was arrested from Old Dhaka yesterday.  After the arrest, another Dhaka court sent the former cop of Kafrul Police Station, Rezaul Karim Patuari, to jail. Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ali Masud Sheikh passed order yesterday afternoon. The court also rejected the bail plea filed by Rezaul’s lawyer, Advocate Shahadat Hossain. Kotwali police produced Rezaul before the court and sought the court’s order to send him to jail. SI Mofakkharul, who is in-charge of the Dhaka Metropolitan Session Judge Court’s prison cell informed that Rezaul was arrested in the morning when he was leaving Shahadat’s office after consulting him. Shahadat however claimed that he himself took Rezaul to Kotwali police station to surrender. Rezaul, who had been arrested in a caseon Sunday, fled while being escorted to a police van. He escaped before being taken to the police van on the court premises. The court fixed January 19, 2016, for beginning of formal trial with deposition of witnesses. On February 19, 2012, SI Nuruzzaman and police source Babu had picked up businessman Faruk Hossain Kamal, from a shop in Kafrul in the city to Kafrul police station, saying a case had been filed against him. The same night, Faruk’s sister Parveen Haque went to Kafrul police station when her brother told her to give Tk. 50,000 to Nuruzzaman and Babu in return for his release. Apparently, the police officer even threatened to kill Faruk if his demand went unheeded. Faruk was produced before a court on February 21 seeking a five-day remand as his sister could not manage the money. The court however sent him to jail rejecting his remand petition despite there being injuries on his body. Following deterioration of his condition, Faruk was admitted to the jail hospital on February 22 and later shifted to DMCH on February 28 where he succumbed to his injuries.
