A Dhaka court yesterday granted bail to BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia after she surrendered in court in Niko graft case, which was filed during the army-backed government in 2007.
After a hearing, Judge Mohammad Aminul Islam of Special Judge's Court-9 granted the bail. The court also fixed December 28 for charge framing hearing against the BNP chief and 10 others accused in the case.
Earlier, Khaleda Zia arrived in the court around 12:00 noon after leaving her Gulshan residence around 11:25. The BNP Chairperson surrendered before the court seeking bail amid high security. The 10-minute brief hearing began at 12:25pm. Taking part in the bail petition hearing, defense councilor Advocate  Khandaker Mahbub Hossain said , his client Khaleda Zia did not misuse any opportunity of the bail .

“My client surrendered before the court seeking bail as per order of the High Court. So, she should be granted bail for the sake of justice,” he told the court.
Advocate Joynal Abedin , Advocate Khorshed Alam and others pro-BNP lawyers assisted Khandaker Mahbub. Advocate Mosharaf Hossain Kajol opposed the bail plea on behalf of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
A huge number of BNP leaders and activists gathered near the court premises to welcome party chief Khaleda Zia. They also chanted slogan against the government. Additional members of law enforcing agencies and intelligence agencies were deployed in the court area since morning to avert any untoward incident.
On June 18, the High Court cleared the way for trial proceedings to resume against Khaleda and others in the Niko graft case filed by the ACC in 2007. The bench of Justice Md Nuruzzaman and Justice Zafar Ahmed also ordered the BNP chief to surrender before the trial court within two months after its verdict reaches the trial court.
The HC order was given rejecting Khaleda’s petition that had challenged the legality of the opening and proceedings of the case. The court also directed the trial court to consider Khaleda’s bail petition, on condition that she did not misuse the bail.
