District administration here yesterday started a week-long drives against use of ploythene and plastic bags as part of an awareness campaign for mandatory usage of jute bags. The drive will continue till December 6, sources said. A mobile court, led by executive magistrate AL Noman, conducted raids at different areas of Mymensingh town and its outskirts and seized a large quantity of plastic and polythene bags and realised Tk 94,000 as fine from the businessmen. As the deadline against use of polythene bags ends, the drives began today to impose compulsory packaging of essentials with jute bags under the 'Mandatory Jute Packaging Act, 2010', sources said. If use of jute bags is ensured for packaging essential commodities like paddy, rice, wheat, maize, fertiliser and sugar instead of plastic bags, the past glory of jute will return and the environment will be preserved as well, said sources. Mahbub Hossain, assistant director of Jute Department here, was also present during the drives.
